Local government is the third tier of government in Australia. In Western Australia there are 137 local governments and two Indian Ocean Territories. Local government in Western Australia is framed by the Local Government Act 1995.
Each local government has a council which is established as the primary decision maker for the local government. They provide services to the local community which includes planning and the delivery of services including waste, roads, parks, playgrounds and gardens,
The day to day running of a council is overseen by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Each council has councillors who are elected by the ratepayers to serve a four year term. The councillors facilitate communication between the community and the council and participate in the decision making process at council meetings. The Mayor is either elected by the council or by the ratepayer depending on the locality.
In 2017 the McGowan government announced a review into the Local Government Act 1995 with a view to modernising it and allow local government to better deliver to their local communities. Submissions have been made by local councils, various community organisations, WALGA and members of the public to name a few.
